Modern Schooling Came From Where???

Read a free online book and change your perception of modern schooling forever!
Below are a few quotes from the book:

“Growth and mastery come only to those who vigorously self-direct. Initiating, creating, doing, reflecting, freely associating, enjoying privacy—these are precisely what the structures of schooling are set up to prevent, on one pretext or another.”
“The strongest meshes of the school net are invisible. Constant bidding for a stranger’s attention creates a chemistry producing the common characteristics of modern schoolchildren: whining, dishonesty, malice, treachery, cruelty. Unceasing competition for official favor in the dramatic fish bowl of a classroom delivers cowardly children, little people sunk in chronic boredom, little people with no apparent purpose for being alive.”

“Much of the weird behavior kids display is a function of the aperiodic reinforcement schedule. And the endless confinement and inactivity slowly drives children out of their minds. Trapped children, like trapped rats, need close management. Any rat psychologist will tell you that.”

OPEN ENROLLMENT 2009/2010

If you are searching for a new spin on traditional, authoritarian schooling, our school may provide the unique experience you're family has been looking for.
What sets Sudbury Schools apart?
LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY BUILDING: Opportunities to share ideas and take the lead in making things happen are integral to the curriculum. In lively interactions, creativity flourishes, ideas become refined and negotiation skills are honed. There is room for everyone’s voice, loud or soft, big or small. Kids receive useful feedback about what it takes to achieve a desired goal. They also gain an important sense of belonging in the community and come to know what it takes to generate success.
STUDENT-POWERED ACTIVITIES, CLASSES AND EVENTS: We emphasize choice and self-direction. Each week of school we meet as a group to manage school affairs, plan and prioritize activities and express interests. Drawing from our dedicated staff and professional resources, we’ll work together to create an exceptional learning experience.
INTEGRATION OF THE WHOLE CHILD: With daily multi-sensory encounters and opportunities for emotional and intellectual growth, our school seeks to support a child’s whole being. The atmosphere of a Sudbury school is one of freedom, fairness, trust and respect.

Freedom to Learn Blog

Introduction to a New Blog about

Play, Curiosity, and Education

Please take a peek at Peter Gray's new blog about how children educate themselves. Mr. Gray is a research professor of psychology at Boston College, a specialist in developmental and evolutionary psychology and author of an introductory psychology textbook, Psychology, now in its 5th edition. He is also the parent of a graduate who later became staff at Sudbury Valley School. Here are some clips from his multi-series blog called Freedom to Learn:
The entire series can be found here

"As adults we do have certain responsibilities toward our children and the world’s children. It is our responsibility to create safe, health-promoting, respectful environments in which children can develop. It is our responsibility to be sure that children have proper foods, fresh air, non-toxic places to play, and lots of opportunities to interact freely with other people across the whole spectrum of ages. It is our responsibility to be models of human decency. But one thing we do not have to worry about is how to educate children. ..." read more
